Position Overview

The RCMP Heritage Centre is seeking a dedicated Retail Manager. Reporting to the Director of Retail, the Retail Manager is responsible for developing, overseeing, and delivering an outstanding retail experience at the RCMP Heritage Centre and Trading Post. The RCMP Heritage Centre and Trading Post at Depot are open 7 days per week therefore the ability to work weekends on a flexible schedule is required. The position is full-time and will commence as soon as possible.  This position is primarily posted at the Trading Post, but there will be some shifts required in the Gift Shop, and meetings at the Heritage Centre.

Every Cadet who goes through the RCMP Academy begins their journey at Depot. The Trading Post is a retail outlet located on Depot, and owned/operated by the Heritage Centre. As Manager of Retail, you will be the primary point of contact at the Trading Post; interfacing with Cadets, RCMP Members and employees, and families of Cadets during graduation. You will play an important role in creating a positive and inviting retail experience for customers from across Canada.

As a Retail Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the retail operation, including managing the purchase and receiving of merchandise, maintaining positive relationships with vendors, inventory management, ensuring the restocking of inventory, maintaining employee schedules, assisting customers with purchases using a point of sale system, and coaching and managing a team of retail associates. You will be responsible for analyzing and determining trends in merchandise and working with the Director of Retail to implement and/or adjust purchasing and sales strategies accordingly.

In this position you will be expected to maintain a high standard of integrity in all business relationships and keep confidential information protected. You will be responsible for maintaining an engaging, welcoming, friendly, accessible, and comfortable experience for all visitors and customers.

Responsibilities and Duties:

Daily Operations

  • Opening and closing duties
  • Effective schedule management to ensure time for purchasing and shopping for inventory items
  • Manage the purchase and receipt of all merchandise, ensuring restocking of inventory
  • Excellent organizational, planning and time management skills, including the ability to handle multiple concurrent priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • You will be required to work weekend and evening shifts

Excellent Customer Service

  • Creating and maintaining a welcoming, accessible, customer-service focused environment for visitors and customers
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with Depot partners, employees, co-workers, vendors and other partners
  • The position requires a candidate who can consistently represent the museum and Trading Post positively and effectively both onsite and in the community
  • Address customer grievances and needs promptly and efficiently to ensure resolution

Manage Sales and Profits

  • Manage all aspects of the Trading Post and Gift Shop Operation including learning and training on the POS system, troubleshooting, inventory management, and regular reporting to Finance, the Director, and CEO
  • Demonstrated strength in achieving targets and meeting deadlines – maintain inventory budget
  • Analyze and determine trends in merchandise
  • You will be responsible for understanding the organization’s strategic priorities and initiatives and developing a deep understanding of our products

Train and Develop Staff

  • Create and maintain employee scheduling and timesheet approval
  • Demonstrate team spirit in managing and coaching your team of retail associates ensuring high customer service standards are held by all associates
  • Collaborate as a crucial member of the store team, offering guidance and assistance to the Director of Retail Services
  • Assist the Director of Retail Services in recruiting, training, supervising, and developing employees
  • Maintain open communication with staff to keep them informed of significant activities
  • Oversee, mentor, foster growth, and appraise employees as necessary


  • Candidates that are bilingual in French and English are considered a strong asset
  • 5+ years combined retail experience
  • Experience in a manager or supervisor position is preferred
  • Customer service training (e.g. Service Best) will be considered an asset
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office
  • Clear and articulate written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated strength in achieving targets and meeting deadlines
  • Demonstrated attention to detail
  • Ability to work effectively with others, yet also able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to maintain an unimpeachable standard of integrity in all business relationships and maintain the confidentiality of information
  • Previous experience in the non-profit or cultural sector will be considered an asset
  • Exceptional team skills and a commitment to maintaining a positive, collaborative respectful work environment are essential qualifications
