This book covers the first decade in the history of the North West Mounted Police, a decisive period in the development of Western Canada.  During this time Sitting Bull and the Sioux sought refuge in Canada, the buffalo disappeared, important treaties were signed with plains Indians and the Canadian Pacific Railway was built across the prairies.  This major change took place without widespread bloodshed largely due to the work of the Mounted Police.  As the decade ended, government neglect and regressive policies set the stage for the North West Rebellion.
