The RCMP Heritage Centre is seeking energetic, positive and proactive individuals for the position of Summer Interpreter. The Summer Interpreters provide tours of the galleries as well as tours of RCMP Academy “Depot” Division, assist with developing and delivering programming and special and family events, works at the front admission desk and gift shop, and develops and delivers summer camp programming. This is an exciting, public-facing visitor service position where you will meet and assist people from around the world!  

The RCMP Heritage Centre is a non-profit museum and cultural centre (not owned or operated, or funded by the RCMP). We provide an outstanding guest experience to visitors from around the world through our galleries, tours, classroom and family-friendly activities and programs, and public events (such as Canada Day).  

The RCMP Heritage Centre is open 7 days per week therefore the ability to work weekends on a flexible schedule is required.  We are hiring 2 to 3 summer student positions for 16 weeks, from May 11 to August 30. This position is 30 to 35 hours/week with a starting wage of $17/hour. 

Role and Responsibilities 

  • Understanding and following all Heritage Centre policies and procedures.  
  • Provide exceptional visitor experiences for visitors of the RCMP Heritage Centre.  
  • Providing excellent customer service to audiences, which will include tourists, field trips, summer camps, and special events.  
  • Being the first point of contact for visitors and welcoming them to the RCMP Heritage Centre, greeting, answering questions, assisting visitors and customers of the gift shop. 
  • Taking admissions and donations. Using the point of sale system to process payments, registrations, and donations.  
  • Using the point of sale system to complete transactions in the gift shop.  
  • Assisting customers in the gift shop  
  • Performing all standard gift shop duties accurately and effectively – cleaning, tidying, sales, receiving inventory, creating displays, and other duties as assigned.  
  • Providing and presenting tours in Centre, Depot tours, and programs.  
  • Regular and periodic checks of the galleries, bathrooms, theatre, lobby, and kitchen to ensure they are tidy, clean, properly set up for the events of the day and to provide an excellent visitor experience.  
  • Helping with scavenger hunts and other Centre activations (such as crafts, story-walks, etc.)  
  • Operating the theatre – providing programming, starting movies, leading group trivia  
  • Trouble-shooting interactive exhibits and communicating to Lead and Manager when something is damaged, broken, or inoperable.  
  • Research and development of activities and materials,  
  • Design and development of youth summer camps and delivery of the summer camps to groups of youth.  
  • Preparations for special events and rentals – including assisting with set-up, take-down, clean-up, etc.  
  • Our collaborative mission is to ensure that all programming offered by the RCMP Heritage meets our strategic goals and is delivered in a professional manner.   
  • You will be required to work weekends and some evenings as programming will, at times, be scheduled outside of regular business hours.   
  • Other duties as assigned.  

 Skills / Knowledge / Abilities 

  • Background or study area in History, Museum Studies, Education, community programming, communications, theatre, or related fields is considered an asset;  
  • Past community or recreation programming or customer service experience will be considered an asset;  
  • French or other second language is considered a considerable asset; 
  • Experience and enjoyment in working with the public; 
  • Must have excellent communication and visitor service skills; 
  • Ability to work with all age-groups; 
  • Must be extremely well-organized and able to work independently; 
  • Must be outgoing, personable, and be able to work well in a team environment; 
  • Candidates with experience delivering engaging presentations to groups, such as teaching, acting, tour guiding, or public speaking will be considered strong assets. 
  • Computer skills required including proven familiarity with databases, Excel spreadsheets and other Microsoft Office applications; 
  • Excellent organizational, planning and time management skills, including the ability to handle multiple, concurrent priorities in a fast-paced environment; 
  • Clear and articulate written and verbal communication skills; 
  • High degree of professionalism and integrity with an exemplary customer service focus; 
  • Ability to work effectively with others, yet also able to work independently with minimal supervision; 
  • Some retail experience is preferred but not required.
